THE EBULLIENT SOULFULNESS OF SAM COOKE

image

Don’t know Sam Cooke? Then you don’t know much about history, but that’s okay, neither did he…

Don’t know much about history
Don’t know much biology
Don’t know much about a science book
Don’t know much about the French I took
But I do know that I love you…

Thank you, Sam Cooke, we love you, too. And we’re grateful you brought soul to pop music.

Sam Cooke Facts: One of the pioneers of soul music, he brought the sounds and feelings of gospel into the Top 40. His music influenced generations of musicians, including Aretha Franklin, Bobby Womack, Al Green, Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, and Marvin Gaye. Cooke was also one of the first black artists to handle the business side of his career, founding a record label and a publishing company. He was also active in the Civil Rights Movement. At the young age of 33, he was severely beaten and shot dead. The official story was that a female hotel manager killed him when he attacked her, but that story is widely disputed.
